Baikal: Sacred Sea of Siberia
Published in Hardcover by Sierra Club Books (October, 1992)
Average review score:

the spirit of SiberiaThe hardcover book is a jewel: the pictures are absolutely beautiful, and the texts which accompany them is interesting. The excerpts from Valentin Rasputin's books on Lake Baikal are well chosen. It is extremely interesting to "meet" this controversial Russian author in the way we do through this book. He deserves praise for his environmental work, especially in such a country as Russia. The book definetely makes you wish to visit the place. It sounds loike a spiritual enriching experience, the lake seems alive...

Balance of Intrigue: International Rivalry in Korea and Manchuria,1884-1899
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Florida (October, 1982)
Average review score:

A must have for Korean ScholarsMr. Lensen's books are always excellent but this one, his last before he passed away, is fantastic. The detail that he has gone into describing the situation in Choson (Korea) just prior to the Russo-Japanese War is very indepth and gives the reader the background of the events leading upto the war between these two countries. With his vast knowledge of the Russians and their expansion towards Korea and Japan, and his access to the Russian files he has made his book invaluable to all who would study and understand Korea.

Bangkok Handbook
Published in Paperback by Moon Travel Handbooks (June, 1995)
Average review score:

Excellent book for travel in BangkokI recently traveled to Bangkok using Michael Buckley's book as a guide. It was an excellent source for figuring out what to see (from the Grand Palace to Patpong). It also has simple maps that explain how to get where you want to go. The book's specific descriptions help one travel around the city whether by Tuk Tuk, river express boat or city bus. I highly recommend this book. It was the best of any I read on travels in Bangkok.

Banking in Transition: East Germany After Unification (Studies in Economic Transition)
Published in Hardcover by Palgrave Macmillan (May, 2000)
Average review score:

Dynamics of banking transitionsI thought the book was interesting and well-written, especially for those of us who are not bankers or in the financial services industry. I gained a better understanding of the banking industry and its role in a market economy. Also, I gained more insight into the difficulties of transitioning from a "centrally planned" economy to a market one. Mr. Robins clearly sheds light on the economic, political, and, more importantly, social and cultural factors involved in the integration of the West and East Germany banking systems. And I think he raises pertinent questions that what works in one place does not necessarily work in another. I would agree with his assessment that some flexibility and customization are necessary. In short, I would recommend his book to anyone interested in the dynamics and challenges of global economics in the 21st century. Because one size definitely does not fit all.

Bears: A Veteran Outdoorsman's Account of the Most Fascinating and Dangerous Animals in North America
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (December, 1986)
Average review score:

An Outstanding Book About a Fascinating AnimalI have owned a copy of this book since I was 15 years old in 1983. I ordered that copy from the now-defunct Outdoor Life Book Club, and that fact that I recently ordered another copy from Amazon.com, to ensure that I'll be able to read and re-read it for years to come, should tell you what I think of it. The late Ben East (he passed away in 1990) was a fine wordsmith with a voluminous knowledge of the outdoors in general and bears specifically that sprang from 60+ years of experience. He writes with an easy, very readable and entertaining style, with many anecdotes of bear behavior, bear hunting and even bear attacks that will cause you to read and re-read this book for years. Just as I have. Very highly recommended.

Beast of the East
Published in Paperback by Human Kinetics Pub (September, 1983)
Average review score:

A great breakdown of a classic college football rivalry. If you're a Pitt fan, then you're longing for that day when Penn State will bow to the Panthers again (sadly, never again in old Pitt Stadium, razed in 1999). If you're a Penn State fan, you've seen that blue and gold nemesis to the west fade from its once high point of gridiron glory. But whether you're a Panther or a Nittany Lion, you've got to appreciate the 107 year old rivalry between these two storied squads. Pannacio's book is a game-by-game history of the series, from the first snowy meeting in 1893, to the day in 1981 when underdog Penn State smooshed then-No.1-ranked Pitt (going into the game 10-0 under Jackie Sherril) in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, Panaccio's book ends in 1981, but it captures the best years of the rivalry, as Pitt has gone 3-10-1 against the team from Happy Valley in the ensuing years. Sadly, the rivalry was interrupted 1993-1996, but four more games were scheduled for 1997-2000, so the thrill temporarily lives on. Hopefully these two schools will continue to schedule one another for the long term. In the meantime, enjoy Pannacio's nicely written work. It's full of photos, newspaper clippings, and gripping highlights.
